Some Aus chap has been thrown into prison for killing a cat by grabbing its tail and banging its head against the ground. This is actually the recommended way to kill a small animal, Its absurd to use courts & prisons for this.
When I studied physiology, we were told to kill a rat without alarming it.
Something about liver function & adrenaline.
The recommended method was to gently and calmly grab the tail, then as quickly as possible to swing it around and crack its head on the lab bench.
I also got to kill a white rabbit by injecting a couple mil of air into a vein - a very quick death

1988, when Tony Blair was shadow energy secretary, he launched a passionate attack on the Conservatives’ climate policies.“What is unbelievably depressing about the government’s response,” he said, “is that they see, in the evidence about greenhouse gases, not an opportunity to promote environmental concern but a chance to make the case for nuclear power. ... Having made a big issue of the greenhouse effect, it became clear that energy efficiency was the best way to deal with it, but … the government’s position has been characterised by a malign reluctance to have anything to do with the notion of energy conservation.” What better description of his own legacy could there be?

This blog has some loose talk about Roberti Bellarmine, or St Robert as the Catholic Encyclopedia calls him "the hammer of heresies." Here is more from the presumably infallible tome:
... 1599 he [Clement VIII] made him Cardinal-Priest.. [RB dies 1621 or 22?] ...a life which had been no less remarkable for its virtues than for its achievements.
The good book fails to mention Giordano Bruno and is eminently weasel-wordish about RB's old buddy Galileo. I suppose there is a viewpoint from which burning a man alive could be considered a "remarkable virtue" RB book advertised here http://www.stjohnfisherforum....

Ray Kurzweil and the Spike. Lets be clear. The Spike is real and immanent. But its foolish to believe in: 1) Computers smarter than people: Lots of GFlops do NOT a super intelligent being make, merely a faster computer intelligence requires a body, a care. fast switches do not intelligence make. We care because we die, and because we have chemical emotions. Machines dont care. Even if we try to make them care, say by adding a "care" accumulator, a 'smart'; machine would simply set the accumulator to 'full', bingo, care no more! Something like a junkie machine.
2) self replicating nanobots. Before a tiny machine can replicate, show me a normal size factory that needs no people supervision at all. It takes an entire economy to make a gadget like a DVD player. No nanobot can do it alone.
3) immortality We have no idea how the inside of a cell works, nor how neurons grow. There is NO possibility of replacing my right sciatic nerve. Absent that, 'immortality' is an absurdly hopeless proposition.
4) Scanning nd downloading minds. This is an absurdity. It is just not possible to scan at the Molecular level. It is probably impossible in principle. There is certainly no inkling of a method. Even if a scan was possible, the reconstruction is not. It is by no means clear that a molecular-accurate scan would constitute a mind.
5) Teleportation is meaningless Even granted scanning & transmission, what would be constituted at the far end would be my twin, not me. At this end I am supposed to agree to be destroyed so my twin can walk free at the far end? Not on your Nellie.
Despite these caveats, it seems clear that exponential growth in machine complexity will lead to a social complexity beyond current comprehension. BUT EcoCrash may subsume the Spike.
Ecocrash: Soil depletion. Water contamination. PeakOil [PO] no cheap oil will gut this culture. 2 Billion township souls with no gardens, no water tanks, will trash the towns. Cheap weapons and sensors will render security obsolete. Car culture, having trashed village level interactions, will stall with PO, leaving us within walking distance of precisely nothing. Global Warming imposed on an unstable system - aka agriculture - will cause instability, wide swings, aka crash. Nothing to eat, no trucks to truck it, no pumps, no water.
Human rights, habeas corpus, due process have already gone - did you notice? Torture, disappearance, assassination, character assassination, have arrived - did you notice? Forgery has replaced elections - did you notice? Forever war has arrived - did you notice? Concentration camps are in use - have you noticed?
There is a nice irony in car bombs: oil troopers pulverised by cars packed with explosives. Car culture brought these troops to this town, Cars smash them down
We made the trek down to a base near the ruins of ancient Babylon. I stayed right next to the Euphrates River, which is significantly smaller than the Tigris. The camp was dotted with hundreds of date palms, olive and pomegranate trees, and thick reeds next to the river.
The next morning I birded in the ruins of Babylon proper. An Iraq babbler sat obligingly on a fence for a few minutes before diving into the reeds. In the same area I saw a few young white-cheeked bulbuls that were just fledging. A pond near an amphitheater from Alexander the Great's time had a black-crowned night heron, a few little egrets, pied kingfishers, and black-winged stilts.
Near the ruins I saw my first laughing dove. It was walking around near the base of a date tree. I really enjoyed the combination of the lush surroundings, the birds, and the history of Babylon, not to mention that this base is much safer than mine -- it almost never gets attacked.
I returned to Baghdad and took another walk to the scrubby area near the lake. I was treated to a great view of an immature isabelline shrike hunting insects along a dirt berm. I also saw two male black francolins -- large chicken-sized game birds -- chasing each other around in the scrub. When I got too close to them they flew a short distance on their broad, short wings and scurried away into the brush. The birds were spectacular, with their black bellies, deep chestnut collars, and white cheek patches.

Two words for the yout: "frozen grapefruit" - South Auckland yout fire frozen grapefruit from pvc tubes - a tough version of potato guns. Auckland has lotsa grapefruit trees in the streets, the only city I've lived in where you could get breakfast from the street
potato gun Unscrew the plug at the back, and give a short burst of hair spray. Note that the amount of fuel is VERY critical; too much will not ignite, and not enough will give you a poor shot. Other references suggest WD-40; try just about any aerosol, but avoid things like liquid oxygen, as PVC shrapnel is difficult to remove.
"Never seen a gun like that," Rydell allowed. "What's it shoot?" "Grapefruit cans," Turvey said. "Fulla concrete." "No shit?" "Watch," Turvey said, and brought the thing to his shoulder. It had a sort of breech, very intricately machined, a trigger-thing like part of a pair vise-grip pliers, and a couple of flexible tubes. The latter ran down, Rydell saw, to a great big canister of gas, - Gibson "Virtual Light"

Take up the White Man's burden-- Ye dare not stoop to less-- Nor call too loud on Freedom To cloke your weariness; By all ye cry or whisper, By all ye leave or do, The silent, sullen peoples Shall weigh your gods and you. Rudyard Kipling 1899 in response to USA invading Philippines
We have been trying to suppress agrarian guerillas in the southern Philippines since the day we took the islands from the Spanish in 1898. We called the peasant rebels Moros and then Huks, now they are being called some kind of “militant” or “terrorist” group, like the Abu Sayyaf. The endless American attempt to squelch whomever it is in the southern Philippines who seem to have a mind of their own is even interwoven with the story of the legendary Colt .45 Automatic Pistol. That weapon with its massive blasting power had been specifically designed to be used against the Moro and Huk rebels in close comba

Solar Tower, Jefferyi, Haribon, Caspian oil, SaudiBinLaden Group
In "Beyond the Rubicon" Michael C. Ruppert says SBG (SaudiBinLaden Group) owns the iridium satellites. But Howard Altman in "Phil in the Blanks" says "..Iridium satellites --..originally funded in no small part by the SBG (Eventually, Iridium LLC went bankrupt and its assets, including the satellites, were purchased by a group that has no connection to SBG.)" so what is Usama's number? Ruppert has some wacky ideas about computers that can read everything, but his ideas on Caspian oil are interesting. It was late in the year 2000 that it was realised that Caspian oil was not another Saudi field, but only 1/10th of that. Hence the panic. June 2001: new rules discouraged fighter interception of errant airliners. The rest is History.

Its often said that rich countries are cleaner than poor countries. so we should concentrate on development not environment But: 1) UnClean on a global scale: looks clean but about to cook the planet ClimateChangeGases
Recent simulations suggest 11° warming is a possibility The planet hasnt been there since the planetoid bombardments stopped. can anyone say "Runaway Greenhouse" "Venus"
energy is invisibly dirty note: Clear skies seen when power plants stopped recently for 2 days in NE-USA no Contrails in the air over USA on 12Sep01 so "clean rich" is relative 2) waste disposal: rich send old circuit boards to be cooked over crude fires in China 3) rich send polluting factories to Mexico 4) rich do not help the poor. except: 1940s & 50s the USA ordered land reform in Japan,SKorea,Taiwan hence Industry in those lands The USA did not order land reform in Philippines: hence Latafundias and poverty 5) rich lend money to elites, payed back by the masses 6) cut flowers and strawberries grown on poor peoples land where once food grew
What is to be done?
Factor4: energy efficiency is not "NoGrowth" its "SmartGrowth" pumps, ducts, heat exchangers, process heat Smart glass Thermal building design , ventilation Sensors, switches, changing to conditions the efficient future involves lots of fussy maintenance of pumps, vents, heat exchangers retrofitting of Solar thermal & electric on roofs (its not risk free, lots of people are going to die falling off those roofs)
The point is that this could mean economic growth with less exhausts Monbiot is partially correct, growth must have a limit. but a few billion$ invested in large scale PhotoVoltaic production could mean jobs, economic growth and clean skies. Government currently picks winners - big Carbon gets huge subsidies. BigCarbon have been winners since 1760, but not anymore. Time for Govt subsidies for PV fuelcell & biomass But these are de-central, so big Govt has no incentive, So PV will have to make it on its own Wind generators are doing ok in Old Europe
Are cars for transport or excitement? if for transport 30kw is plenty, electric hybrids with 10kw petrol engine are adequate 30kph is plenty fast enough to get around town In my fathers day, the entire town of Woodville took the train for a town picnic. If cars are for excitement, or to impress women, then there is no limit on size or power or gas emissions. This is the weak link of Homo Sap. Sexual selection has no limit. The tiger puts a paw on the peacocks tail.

The rapid unraveling of the coup suggested that the Venezuelan plotters would have done better seeking advise from Supreme Court Justice Rehnquist rather than from Reich. It soon became public that Bush officials maintained a web of connections with the conspirators and appeared to have foreknowledge of the plot. ward_churchill_responds* It is not disputed that the Pentagon was a military target, or that a CIA office was situated in the World Trade Center. Following the logic by which U.S. Defense Department spokespersons have consistently sought to justify target selection in places like Baghdad, this placement of an element of the American "command and control infrastructure" in an ostensibly civilian facility converted the Trade Center itself into a "legitimate" target. Again following U.S. military doctrine, as announced in briefing after briefing, those who did not work for the CIA but were nonetheless killed in the attack amounted to no more than "collateral damage." If the U.S. public is prepared to accept these "standards" when the are routinely applied to other people, they should be not be surprised when the same standards are applied to them. ______________________ Ward in 2003

I heard that the widespread use of DU in the first Gulf War was believed to be the primary cause of the health problems suffered by its 580,400 veterans, of whom 467 were wounded during the war itself. Ten years later, 11,000 were dead and 325,000 on medical disability. DU carried in semen led to high rates of endometriosis in their wives and girlfriends, often requiring hysterectomies. Noted in the New York Times web site 25Jan05.. Two sex stories
1) A Sex offenders tale: group therapy, leader in nice suit & tie "for respect" the central villains crime is playing games involving touching a 12 year old near genital region. Typing some rude suggestions to her on his computer. Punishment: 35 year parole, compulsory group therapy. The central narrative here is the complex humiliation routines in the group. Claims of expectation of the truth when asking about "fantasies" - unless the prisoner produces an acceptable unacceptable fantasy about pre-puberty sex, he is regarded as recalcitrant. The therapist demands a narrative, an obscene narrative. The therapists satisfaction is objectively indistinguishable from a purchaser of pornography. In the recounting of the therapeutic process, the therapist is us, in a nice suit. He elicits and packages obscene fantasy narratives for our uneasy delight. We demand these tales. The process aims to shackle a bunch of men for life. It could be anyone is a sub-text. We have the means of humiliation and control.
2) Journo buys 2 "teenage" girls in Cambodia and returns them to village with $100 B-girls can have no narrative except as "rescued" eg Dennis O’Rourke's film "Good Woman of Bangkok" The narrative of a woman from SEAsia who marries a rich German, gets bored with Germany, returns to the Bar scene. Her daily life, her friends, her son in the province with her mother, her Sicilian boyfriend, parties till dawn. This complex life, with its load of excitement, can never be the subject of a narrative. She would laugh at the offer of $100 to return to her village for a year. She might make $100 in a few days. Those days might involve true affection, true fun. . . .Is this narrative a grotesque fetish of the Journo?. He pays 2 or 3 hundred for the rescue fantasy. Disrupts the family income. ($100 for small shop, expecting the family to go hungry) He gets a grand performance at a very low daily rate. A typical client might pay $100 over a few days. This journo expects a years worth of righteous indignation, followed by a self-satisfied glow - a years performance for $300. This is truly disgusting exploitation. Too mean to give a decent amount of money. To give $100 for a year is so distant, demeaning, disgusting.
Both stories exhibit fantasies of control. "Any man, any girl, can be put through the wringer of our narrative. We are bringing a new definition of free and acceptable, and we have enforcement to hand."
But: To protect children, lets start with a 30kph speed limit on all cars. This would prevent a huge number of deaths and maimings, but we wont have it. We like foolish speed, we are sold it. we buy it
Then: allow imports from poor countries, and cancel repayments of spurious loans that benefitted only a tiny rich class. True comprehensive aid, true development. Not on the agenda.
The agenda is not protection of children, it is a narrative of control.

Modest Witness Boylefound a number of ways of displaying modesty. One of the most straightforward was the use of the form of the experimental essay. The essay, that is, the piecemeal reporting of experimental trials, was explicitly contrasted to the natural philosophical system. Those who wrote entire systems were identified as "confident" individuals, whose ambition extended beyond what was proper or possible. By contrast, those who wrote experimental essays were "sober and modest men," "diligent and judicious" philosophers, who did not "assert more than they can prove."

Such rhetoric positions the president as a prophetic spokesman for God rather than as a petitioning supplicant. .. One is inclined to hope that Bush might recall the words of St. Augustine of Hippo to a student: "I wouldn't have you prepare for yourself any way of grasping and holding the truth other than the one prepared by him who, as God, saw how faltering were our steps. The Republican Guard provocatively string a couple of American mercenaries up on a bridge in Fallujah, and then sneers "What are you going to do about it?" They already know the answer of course, and some slack-jaw in the Pentagon orders 13,000 out of America's 30,000 front-line combat troops to go and get tied down in Fallujah, while idiot Wolfowitz rubber stamps the order. Now how easy was that? Fine, the U.S. Marines rush through the almost deserted city of Fallujah, shoot a few unarmed civilians in church for fun, while using up huge quantities of incredibly valuable water, food, fuel and ammunition. While they are thus engaged the Republican Guard zaps a few more American convoys, meaning the Marines will have even less water, food, fuel and ammunition. Next up the Republican Guard kills a few more American soldiers further north in Samarra, and predictably sneers "What are you going to do about it?". The same slack-jaw in the Pentagon immediately orders 5,000 more front-line combat troops north to Samarrah, while Wolfowitz gets his rubber stamp ready. Neither man can read a map, so what the hell! Then as if by magic the Republican Guard causes havoc in Mosul, shooting a few dozen collaborators and setting fire to some useless empty buildings. No need to sneer now, because slack-jaw in the Pentagon is already behaviorally conditioned. Quick as a flash he assigns another 4,000 front-line combat troops to Mosul, though he has no idea where it is. Well, it's a heck of a long way north, and even longer coming back if the Republican Guard doesn't want you to.

The occasional tank main gun report and the staccato rhythm of a Marine Corps LAV or Army Bradley Fighting Vehicle's 25-millimeter cannon provide the bass line for a symphony of destruction. Lt. Col. Military bulldozers have mown down palm groves in the rural al-Dora farming area on the outskirts of Baghdad, residents say. Electricity has been cut, the local fuel station destroyed and the access road blocked. The U.S. action comes after resistance fighters attacked soldiers from this area several weeks back. _________________________ _____________
The United States signed and ratified the Geneva Conventions in 1956. In 1996, Congress passed the War Crimes Act, criminalizing breaches of the Conventions. A "grave breach" of Geneva is a federal crime, punishable by imprisonment "for life or any term of years," and Geneva explicitly states that no nation "bound by the Convention can offer any valid pretext, legal or other, for not respecting the Convention in all its parts."
