Converging towards Disaster. Global 11°C, Universal sludge, sex crimes, modest witness
01.30.05 (6:08 pm)   [edit]

Converging towards Disaster

  1. Hubberts Peak: cheap oil no more
no more cheap transport, food, industry
  2. Fat cats: wasteful consumption 200m2 houses un insulated, un-aligned, airconned
fat cars for fantasy drives across faux nature
  3. Warmongering: Big Old Oil sells war to ignorant mid-Westerners
    well-head dwellers fight back
  4. Global Warming distorts crops, ports, forests
11° means all major cities abandoned, crop growth uncertain
  5. Coal smoke from China & India covers the globe
  6. Population grows to 9Billion and all want a Pajero and grainfedsteak
  7. nuclear reactors abounding
million year guards needed, a plutonium tyranny forever
  8. engineered cells and virii from cheap tiny labs
  9. smart cheap low flying rockets
  10. Habitat destruction causing mass extinction
Funny how 1 to 4 are about oil, 5 & 6 involve oil, 7 & 8 may be weapons in oil wars
4 makes 10 worse
1 & 2 make 3 worse

7 abates 4 but makes 3 worse

ccc..Global Warming is 'Twice as Bad as Previously Thought' by Steve Connor
nature
Biggest-ever climate simulation warns temperatures may rise by 11°C.
Professor Bob Spicer, of the Open University, said average global temperature rises of 11°C are unprecedented in the long geological record of the Earth. "If we go back to the Cretaceous, which is 100 million years ago, the best estimates of the global mean temperature was about 6°C higher than present," Professor Spicer said. "So 11°C is quite substantial and if this is right we would be going into a realm that we really don't have much evidence for even in the rock [geological] record."

What is climateprediction.net?
Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. ..we need people around the world to give us time on their computers ..

Most of the universe is suffused with organic sludge
Ice with a smear of "tar-like substances"
This morning I decided that humans are determined to bring Earth
into line with the rest.
Maybe not ice, perhaps a Venusian acid smog.
We stand on the shore of a liquid water ocean.
How rare and precious, and endangered is that?
..interstellar dust particles ..consist mostly of 3-dimensionally cross-linked organic macro-molecules, so-called polymeric-heterocyclic- aromates.
"They rather resemble tar-like substances than minerals" ..
"It is the size of these molecular fragments with nuclear masses of up to 2000 ..
"Only organic molecules can reach those sizes". The largest molecules found in space so far are the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which reach masses of a few hundred mass units.
..interstellar dust must have about 10% of nitrogen and/or oxygen in addition to hydrogen and carbon. This means that these cannot be pure PAHs, which are planar, but are especially due to the nitrogen extend into all three spacial directions.
...............
1978 Wickramasinghe conducted experiments in the laboratory that showed infrared light passed through dried bacteria was absorbed in a characteristic way between 2 and 4 micrometers. He then confirmed that the infrared spectrum of GC-IRS7 (a powerful infrared light source from the center of the Milky Way galaxy) matched this absorption. This may mean that space is full of dried bacteria, but how can this be?

Noted in the New York Times web site 25Jan05..
Two sex stories

1) A Sex offenders tale: group therapy, leader in nice suit & tie "for respect" the central villains crime is playing games involving touching a 12 year old near genital region. Typing some rude suggestions to her on his computer. Punishment: 35 year parole, compulsory group therapy.
The central narrative here is the complex humiliation routines in the group. Claims of expectation of the truth when asking about "fantasies" - unless the prisoner produces an acceptable unacceptable fantasy about pre-puberty sex, he is regarded as recalcitrant. The therapist demands a narrative, an obscene narrative. The therapists satisfaction is objectively indistinguishable from a purchaser of pornography. In the recounting of the therapeutic process, the therapist is us, in a nice suit. He elicits and packages obscene fantasy narratives for our uneasy delight. We demand these tales.
The process aims to shackle a bunch of men for life. It could be anyone is a sub-text. We have the means of humiliation and control.

2) Journo buys 2 "teenage" girls in Cambodia and returns them to village with $100
B-girls can have no narrative except as "rescued"
eg Dennis O’Rourke's film "Good Woman of Bangkok"
The narrative of a woman from SEAsia who marries a rich German, gets bored with Germany, returns to the Bar scene. Her daily life, her friends, her son in the province with her mother, her Sicilian boyfriend, parties till dawn. This complex life, with its load of excitement, can never be the subject of a narrative. She would laugh at the offer of $100 to return to her village for a year.
She might make $100 in a few days. Those days might involve true affection, true fun.
. . .Is this narrative a grotesque fetish of the Journo?. He pays 2 or 3 hundred for the rescue fantasy. Disrupts the family income. ($100 for small shop, expecting the family to go hungry)
He gets a grand performance at a very low daily rate. A typical client might pay $100 over a few days. This journo expects a years worth of righteous indignation, followed by a self-satisfied glow - a years performance for $300. This is truly disgusting exploitation. Too mean to give a decent amount of money. To give $100 for a year is so distant, demeaning, disgusting.

Both stories exhibit fantasies of control. "Any man, any girl, can be put through the wringer of our narrative. We are bringing a new definition of free and acceptable, and we have enforcement to hand."

But: To protect children, lets start with a 30kph speed limit on all cars. This would prevent a huge number of deaths and maimings,
but we wont have it. We like foolish speed, we are sold it. we buy it

Then: allow imports from poor countries, and cancel repayments of spurious loans that benefitted only a tiny rich class.
True comprehensive aid, true development.
Not on the agenda.

The agenda is not protection of children, it is a narrative of control.

Modest Witness
Boylefound a number of ways of displaying modesty. One of the most straightforward was the use of the form of the experimental essay. The essay, that is, the piecemeal reporting of experimental trials, was explicitly contrasted to the natural philosophical system. Those who wrote entire systems were identified as "confident" individuals, whose ambition extended beyond what was proper or possible. By contrast, those who wrote experimental essays were "sober and modest men," "diligent and judicious" philosophers, who did not "assert more than they can prove."
