Seymour Hersh: "We've Been Taken Over by a Cult"
democracynow
Let's all forget this word insurgency. It's one of the most misleading words of all. Insurgency assumes that we had gone to Iraq and won the war and a group of disgruntled people began to operate against us and we then had to do counter-action against them. That would be an insurgency. We are fighting the people we started the war against...
the amazing thing is we are been taken over basically by a cult, eight or nine neo-conservatives have somehow grabbed the government. Just how and why and how they did it so efficiently, will have to wait for much later historians...
..We are systematically bombing that country. There are no embedded journalists at Doha, the Air Force base I think we’re operating out of. No embedded journalists at the aircraft carrier, Harry Truman. That's the aircraft carrier that I think is doing many of the operational fights... bombing is going to be key to it, which means that what happened in Fallujah, essentially Iraq -- some of you remember Vietnam -- Iraq is being turn into a free-fire zone right in front of us....

Converging towards Disaster. Global 11°C, Universal sludge, sex crimes, modest witness

Converging towards Disaster

  1. Hubberts Peak: cheap oil no more
no more cheap transport, food, industry
  2. Fat cats: wasteful consumption 200m2 houses un insulated, un-aligned, airconned
fat cars for fantasy drives across faux nature
  3. Warmongering: Big Old Oil sells war to ignorant mid-Westerners
    well-head dwellers fight back
  4. Global Warming distorts crops, ports, forests
11° means all major cities abandoned, crop growth uncertain
  5. Coal smoke from China & India covers the globe
  6. Population grows to 9Billion and all want a Pajero and grainfedsteak
  7. nuclear reactors abounding
million year guards needed, a plutonium tyranny forever
  8. engineered cells and virii from cheap tiny labs
  9. smart cheap low flying rockets
  10. Habitat destruction causing mass extinction
Funny how 1 to 4 are about oil, 5 & 6 involve oil, 7 & 8 may be weapons in oil wars
4 makes 10 worse
1 & 2 make 3 worse

7 abates 4 but makes 3 worse

Biggest-ever climate simulation warns temperatures may rise by 11°C.
Professor Bob Spicer, of the Open University, said average global temperature rises of 11°C are unprecedented in the long geological record of the Earth. "If we go back to the Cretaceous, which is 100 million years ago, the best estimates of the global mean temperature was about 6°C higher than present," Professor Spicer said. "So 11°C is quite substantial and if this is right we would be going into a realm that we really don't have much evidence for even in the rock [geological] record."

Most of the universe is suffused with organic sludge
Ice with a smear of "tar-like substances"
This morning I decided that humans are determined to bring Earth
into line with the rest.
Maybe not ice, perhaps a Venusian acid smog.
We stand on the shore of a liquid water ocean.
How rare and precious, and endangered is that?
..interstellar dust particles ..consist mostly of 3-dimensionally cross-linked organic macro-molecules, so-called polymeric-heterocyclic- aromates.
"They rather resemble tar-like substances than minerals" ..
"It is the size of these molecular fragments with nuclear masses of up to 2000 ..
"Only organic molecules can reach those sizes". The largest molecules found in space so far are the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which reach masses of a few hundred mass units.
..interstellar dust must have about 10% of nitrogen and/or oxygen in addition to hydrogen and carbon. This means that these cannot be pure PAHs, which are planar, but are especially due to the nitrogen extend into all three spacial directions.

1978 Wickramasinghe conducted experiments in the laboratory that showed infrared light passed through dried bacteria was absorbed in a characteristic way between 2 and 4 micrometers. He then confirmed that the infrared spectrum of GC-IRS7 (a powerful infrared light source from the center of the Milky Way galaxy) matched this absorption. This may mean that space is full of dried bacteria, but how can this be?

Noted in the New York Times web site 25Jan05..
Two sex stories

1) A Sex offenders tale: group therapy, leader in nice suit & tie "for respect" the central villains crime is playing games involving touching a 12 year old near genital region. Typing some rude suggestions to her on his computer. Punishment: 35 year parole, compulsory group therapy.
The central narrative here is the complex humiliation routines in the group. Claims of expectation of the truth when asking about "fantasies" - unless the prisoner produces an acceptable unacceptable fantasy about pre-puberty sex, he is regarded as recalcitrant. The therapist demands a narrative, an obscene narrative. The therapists satisfaction is objectively indistinguishable from a purchaser of pornography. In the recounting of the therapeutic process, the therapist is us, in a nice suit. He elicits and packages obscene fantasy narratives for our uneasy delight. We demand these tales.
The process aims to shackle a bunch of men for life. It could be anyone is a sub-text. We have the means of humiliation and control.

2) Journo buys 2 "teenage" girls in Cambodia and returns them to village with $100
B-girls can have no narrative except as "rescued"
eg Dennis O’Rourke's film "Good Woman of Bangkok"
The narrative of a woman from SEAsia who marries a rich German, gets bored with Germany, returns to the Bar scene. Her daily life, her friends, her son in the province with her mother, her Sicilian boyfriend, parties till dawn. This complex life, with its load of excitement, can never be the subject of a narrative. She would laugh at the offer of $100 to return to her village for a year.
She might make $100 in a few days. Those days might involve true affection, true fun.
. . .Is this narrative a grotesque fetish of the Journo?. He pays 2 or 3 hundred for the rescue fantasy. Disrupts the family income. ($100 for small shop, expecting the family to go hungry)
He gets a grand performance at a very low daily rate. A typical client might pay $100 over a few days. This journo expects a years worth of righteous indignation, followed by a self-satisfied glow - a years performance for $300. This is truly disgusting exploitation. Too mean to give a decent amount of money. To give $100 for a year is so distant, demeaning, disgusting.

Both stories exhibit fantasies of control. "Any man, any girl, can be put through the wringer of our narrative. We are bringing a new definition of free and acceptable, and we have enforcement to hand."

But: To protect children, lets start with a 30kph speed limit on all cars. This would prevent a huge number of deaths and maimings,
but we wont have it. We like foolish speed, we are sold it. we buy it

Then: allow imports from poor countries, and cancel repayments of spurious loans that benefitted only a tiny rich class.
True comprehensive aid, true development.
Not on the agenda.

The agenda is not protection of children, it is a narrative of control.

Modest Witness
Boylefound a number of ways of displaying modesty. One of the most straightforward was the use of the form of the experimental essay. The essay, that is, the piecemeal reporting of experimental trials, was explicitly contrasted to the natural philosophical system. Those who wrote entire systems were identified as "confident" individuals, whose ambition extended beyond what was proper or possible. By contrast, those who wrote experimental essays were "sober and modest men," "diligent and judicious" philosophers, who did not "assert more than they can prove."

Such rhetoric positions the president as a prophetic spokesman for God rather than as a petitioning supplicant. ..
One is inclined to hope that Bush might recall the words of St. Augustine of Hippo to a student: "I wouldn't have you prepare for yourself any way of grasping and holding the truth other than the one prepared by him who, as God, saw how faltering were our steps. That way is, first, humility; second, humility; third, humility; and as often as you ask, I'll tell you, humility."

On the counter lay small quantities of marijuana (for which I have a physician's recommendation), mushrooms, and ketamine that had allegedly been encountered in my suitcase. That the total volume of this prize was significantly more compact than the amount of high explosive necessary to endanger an aircraft, and indeed, insufficient to merit a felony charge on any count, didn't matter to them. They clearly regarded me as a threat to public safety. When I pointed out to the officials that they only had authority to search for threats to the aircraft, one of them, a bug-eyed, crew-cutted troglodyte, declared that, if I had taken any of these substances, then I would have endangered Flight 310. That such an obviously ungifted person was capable of so imaginative a conceptual leap remains a marvel to me.

The Republican Guard provocatively string a couple of American mercenaries up on a bridge in Fallujah, and then sneers "What are you going to do about it?" They already know the answer of course, and some slack-jaw in the Pentagon orders 13,000 out of America's 30,000 front-line combat troops to go and get tied down in Fallujah, while idiot Wolfowitz rubber stamps the order. Now how easy was that?
Fine, the U.S. Marines rush through the almost deserted city of Fallujah, shoot a few unarmed civilians in church for fun, while using up huge quantities of incredibly valuable water, food, fuel and ammunition. While they are thus engaged the Republican Guard zaps a few more American convoys, meaning the Marines will have even less water, food, fuel and ammunition. Next up the Republican Guard kills a few more American soldiers further north in Samarra, and predictably sneers "What are you going to do about it?". The same slack-jaw in the Pentagon immediately orders 5,000 more front-line combat troops north to Samarrah, while Wolfowitz gets his rubber stamp ready. Neither man can read a map, so what the hell!
Then as if by magic the Republican Guard causes havoc in Mosul, shooting a few dozen collaborators and setting fire to some useless empty buildings. No need to sneer now, because slack-jaw in the Pentagon is already behaviorally conditioned. Quick as a flash he assigns another 4,000 front-line combat troops to Mosul, though he has no idea where it is. Well, it's a heck of a long way north, and even longer coming back if the Republican Guard doesn't want you to.

..History, on the other hand, treats harshly the occupying power which resorts to the use of the tools of terror to subdue an occupied people.
In an effort to reverse this trend, Bremer rescinded his de-Baathification programme, and ordered the Badr assassination squads to stand down.
..The Sunni-based resistance, having been targeted by the Badr assassins, struck back with a vengeance.
..In a campaign of targeted assassinations using car bombs and ambushes, the resistance has engaged in its own campaign of terror against the Shia, viewed by the Sunni fighters as being little more than collaborators of the American occupation.
..Having started the game of politically motivated assassination, the US has once again found itself trumped by forces inside Iraq it does not understand, and as such will never be able to defeat.
..History will eventually depict as legitimate the efforts of the Iraqi resistance to destabilise and defeat the American occupation forces and their imposed Iraqi collaborationist government.

"We the Tikopia" the 1936 Anthropological classic, which, sadly, we read for the sex details. I cant remember if Jean Genet "Our Lady of the Flowers" was on our reading list by then.

If the U.S. had an infant mortality rate as good as Cuba's, we would save an additional 2,212 American babies a year.
Yes, Cuba's. Babies are less likely to survive in America, with a health care system that we think is the best in the world, than in impoverished and autocratic Cuba. According to the latest C.I.A. World Factbook, Cuba is one of 41 countries that have better infant mortality rates than the U.S.
Even more troubling, the rate in the U.S. has worsened recently.
In every year since 1958, America's infant mortality rate improved, or at least held steady. But in 2002, it got worse: 7 babies died for each thousand live births, while that rate was 6.8 deaths the year before.

According to Chas Freeman, former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia and head of the independent Middle East Policy Council, Mr Bush recently asked Mr Powell for his view on the progress of the war. "We're losing," Mr Powell was quoted as saying. Mr Freeman said Mr Bush then asked the secretary of state to leave.

Absent life, organic chemistry will be vastly complicated,
On Titan and elsewhere with hydrocarbons, the difference between life and complex organic chemistry may be difficult to determine, particularly if the life" is not like earth's.
Lovelock and others suggest
1) life must be all over a world, it won't survive on a small portion.
2) life will produce out-of-equilibrium products (eg Oxygen in earth's atmosphere.

I'm not certain that these points are gospel.
If we find life elsewhere it might take years to distinguish from organic chemistry in the absence of 1) & 2)

Pipelineistan & Putin
Mike Whitney: 'Vladimir Putin and the global realignment'11January2005
Khodorkovsky tried to transfer ownership of Russia's largest oil company Yukos to friends in Israel and put American businessmen in charge of overall operations. It was a clear strategy to shift control of Russia's greatest natural resource to outside of the country. ..Putin responded by arresting him and putting Yukos under state control. In other words, he acted in the public interest

aaaaaaCaspian capers By Sergei Blagov ..26Aug2004
Moscow has been insisting that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline is not economically viable, indicating that Russia remains wary of the US-backed project. Last February, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev came to Moscow to reassure Russia that the BTC was not intended to damage Russia's economic interests.
Coincidence or not, Kalyuzhny happened to be the BTC's most zealous critic. He threatened to undermine Kazakh crude oil supplies to the BTC, accusing Washington of sponsoring the BTC pipeline in order to bypass Russia. Following Kalyuzhny's removal, it remains to be seen whether Russia can remain opposed to the BTC, as well as the US pursuit of the Caspian's hydrocarbon riches

MOSCOW - For a decade Washington has backed the Turkish and Azerbaijan governments to steer the export of Caspian region crude oil away from Russia. Russia's newest riposte has been to ally the Russian and Iranian oil industries, and open up the shortest, cheapest and most lucrative oil route of all, southwards out of the Caspian to Iran.

In Iraq, Neo-Zion has displaced the Generalissimo, in the Faith-based belief they could sieze everything personally. Aint gonna happen. GW has taken to demanding only good news, so we have the classic tectonic build-up.

Aceh update:
Allan Nairn interview
he military is also impeding the flow of aid. They’ve commandeered a hanger at the Banda Aceh airport, where they are taking control of internationally shipped in supplies. We just got a report this afternoon that the distribution of supplies is being done in some towns and villages only to people who hold the ‘red and white,’ which is a special ID card issued to Acehnese by the Indonesian police. You have to go to a police station to get one of these ID cards, and it is only issued to people who the police certify as not being opponents of the army, not being critics of the government. Of course many people are afraid to go and apply for such a card.
big mainstream charities. There’s a major problem. Those agencies and charities all have contracts with the Indonesian government, contracts which oblige them to either channel funds through the government or work in concert with the government, which means that government officials and army officers can steal the aid, and there are already indications that this is happening. And even that aid which is not stolen may be used in a way to consolidate military control over the population.

Children swarmed. When the Sheridans were little they were forbidden to set foot there because of the revolting language and of what they might catch. Step back Jakarta
The TNI, army of the Jakarta regime, despised throughout the archipelago
has declared that foreign aid workers
"were restricted to the provincial capitals of Banda Aceh and Meulabohi"
This hideous, murderous, secrecy cannot stand.
It is absurd to suggest that GAM is a danger.
It is clear to all that TNI is the danger.
Now is the time for Documentary makers (like Winston Cuthbert) and human rights investigators
to get on board aid planes, get to Aceh, get to the hills
and disclose the atrocious murders and tortures that the TNI has been perpetrating for decades.
The only other slight danger might be if a foreigner stumbled upon a ganga crop.
Aceh grows some of the best gang in the world, a trade is reputed to be guarded with force.

Jakarta has proved by its ghastly delays that it cannot care for Aceh.
It has proved for years that it does not care for Aceh
Arm the Aus troops and state simply that he who pays the piper
calls the tune. No more actions against Acehenese.
The military last week killed the two unarmed rebels as they tried to assist relatives, said Tengku Jamaica, a rebel spokesman speaking by cell phone from Aceh.
General Suwarya confirmed the restrictions. He said that if a US helicopter wanted to take relief stores to Aceh's second-biggest town of Lhokseumawe, it would need his permission to do so.

Infinite Orgasms
Cycling down King St on New Year's eve
"You ve got a nice face" says a girl in 711
- well it ought to be after 2K spent
on Keratotomy and 1.2K spent on Blepharoplasty
"What are you doing tonight?" from another group of girls.
Its so nice to receive flirtations.
Somehow he has lost the touch in this town.
On the Aspie spectrum, solitary in this mean continent
(mean despite millions pledged for tsunami victims)
But two weeks with a Silom girl, cute, warm, sexy,
gorgeous, funny, loving,
shows he isnt incapable of human contact,
just incapable on this continent.

P holds his cock and stretches the opening like a tiny mouth
"Fuck me now" in a tiny voice.
She makes cutting movements with her fingers
chop chop "Help me, help me" in a little squeak.
How could he not fall for such a girl?
P washes so often that he tries to catch her before a shower
to see what she tastes like. She struggles so much he lets her go.
In the bath, with a litre bottle of conditioner,
a luxurious amount to a poor girl used to expensive tiny bottles,
Carefully slip a ring finger past her smooth strong anus.
She likes that, but she cant say so. Its good to be clean there.
Later, tongue flicking her clitoris barrel,
finger in her newly clean arse,
Every time he moves from flicking her clit to press her Urethra,
she comes once, a single pulse, the firm band of her anal sphincter
grips his finger.
Like the childish first pulse of pleasure
felt when swinging on a knotted rope hung from a pine
in the town belt
P can come with this single pulse again and again.
An infinite Orgasm.
Older women come more like men, a sequence, then refractory,
Where he has to stop flicking because
"I've come twice and it feels like electricity"
But this young woman has something that Masters and Johnson never found,
She can come again and again, in single pulses.
Tireseus had it right.
an infinite infantile erotic capacity,
infinitely endearing,

Aceh, Sumatra, GAM, Bukit Lawang, MMI, FPI

Aceh
Its difficult to predict what will happen in Aceh. The Jakarta govt can no longer keep out foreigners, which means video cameras and interviews with massacre survivors. The free Aceh movement may grow, or Jakarta control may strengthen. If the Jakarta crowd are more militantly Islamic, they may prevail. This would make for some head-scratching in the USA - they like Jakarta ("Around here Jakarta pays the bills" - Walt Wriston, boss of CityBank 1980) In 1999 Clinton cut some military links when Jakarta mercs went ape in Timor.
GWBush hasnt restored ties, but he isnt averse to troops going ape. So USA may end up supporting Islamic fundies in Aceh. With newly porous borders, there may be some nasties like JI percolating into Aceh.

Sumatra has oil, which is being depleted at a furious rate.

ExxonMobil is getting a lot of gas in Sumatra, they hire Javanese mercenaries, who add to the violence perpetrated by the Indonesian army.
Timber is a big money spinner. Like many tropical despotic regimes, Jakarta rewards loyalty by handing out forest "concessions". Combined with illegal logging, the result is flash floods - as at Bukit Lawang in 2003, and the loss of habitat for Orang Utans.
aaaThere was a successful OrangUtan rehabilitation program near Bukit Lawang which I visited in 79. Seeing the apes swinging in to the feeding platform was fantastic. The leading primatologist was a woman (Regina Frey?), as are most field primatologists. She had some fascinating gossip about Jane Goodall. The global ecosystem of female primatologists has its own culture.

GAM not fundamentalist?
GAM leadership itself (which is nationalist and left-wing in orientation) has always kept its distance from Al Qaeda.
When Al Qaeda leaders Al Zwahiri and Mohammad Atef.. visited Aceh in June 2000, GAM leaders rebuffed their efforts to embrace GAM. After the 11 September 2001 .. Abdullah Syafiah, the GAM military commander shot dead by Indonesian forces in early 2002, is said to have sent a message of condolence to the US Ambassador in Jakarta. When the Indonesian militant group, Laskar Jihad later attempted to rally support for a radical religious agenda in Aceh, GAM called on Acehnese to stay away, a call heeded by most Acehnese. GAM has thus reaffirmed its nationalist and territorial objectives, and its refusal to get involved in a wider religious war.
When the Dutch declared war on Acheh in 1873, the sovereignty over the whole of Sumatra was universally and formally recognized to be belonging to Acheh (There are two Treaties with England that proved that: the Treaty of 1603, and the Treaty of 1819. Both still valid)

Wellington had few other fears. No mosquitos, no air pollution, no sunburn.
